Case Study:

an elevated structure with a complex engineering challenge

This project was a new build dwelling adjacent to a historical property that required a delicate balance between aesthetics and functionality.

The goal was to deliver a design that respected the minimalist impact of the architectural vision while ensuring structural integrity, feasibility, and cost-efficiency.

The Brief:

“Our client tasked us with delivering structural solutions for a striking new-build space on a challenging, steeply sloped site in Bath. The project brief was to create a modern, floating luxury space in a landmark location that maximised views while minimising its impact on the surrounding landscape.”

Paul Horsfall, MESH Engineering

Challenges Encountered

Engineering on a Moving Hillside

There is an extensive history of landslips in the immediate area, and previous work on the adjoining historical property had required significant intervention and investment to stabilise the ground. Particular challenges included:

  1. Gradient Constraints:
The steep site presented major slope stability risks, requiring careful engineering interventions. There were significant challenges for construction logistics and the integration of structural elements. Accessibility and construction methodology needed careful consideration.

  2. Structural Feasibility:
The architect envisioned a lightweight, almost effortless-looking structure, requiring robust foundations with minimal visual impact.

  3. Practical Considerations:
The client wanted an elegant design that remained cost-effective and practical to construct. Achieving this balance required close collaboration with the client, architects, other experts, and construction teams.

Our Approach

Achieving Stability and Beauty

Site Analysis and Engineering Judgment

We began by commissioning comprehensive geotechnical ground investigations to gain a full picture of the existing ground state. Drawing on our network of industry contacts, we engaged a specialist in slope stability with particular expertise in Bath’s complex geology. In a multi-stage approach, we first designed a scheme for stabilising the hillside itself, followed by foundation design.

By leveraging advanced slope stability analysis, we ensured that our foundation solutions would prevent movement that could undermine the build over time.

Balancing Design and Structural Integrity

Given the ground condition, we developed a robust solution:

  • Contiguous Piled Retaining Walls & Bearing Piles – These deep-ground interventions anchored the structure securely, mitigating movement risks.

  • Steel-Framed Superstructure – The visible part of the building is a sleek, lightweight steel frame resting on slender columns, creating the illusion of a floating structure while ensuring stability and longevity.

The Outcome

Seamless Engineering, Stunning Results

The Electric Lodge is a perfect example of how innovative structural engineering can bring ambitious architectural visions to life. The complex, carefully developed engineering sits invisible below ground. As a result, the finished structure appears effortless, its stability is the result of meticulous planning, expert collaboration, and deep technical expertise.

The project not only delivered on the client’s aesthetic ambitions but also overcame significant site challenges, demonstrating our ability to merge engineering precision with architectural elegance.

From the Client

"I have worked with MESH Engineering on several projects. They are approachable, professional, and incredibly knowledgeable.

They went out of their way to ensure that I, as a completely non-technical person, could understand what were, at times, complex diagrams and calculations. They were proactive in addressing challenges and consistently delivered high-quality results, on time and within budget.

I wouldn't hesitate to work with them again and highly recommend their services.”
